You have probably been asked these questions a hundred times: When is the last time you changed your password for your accounts, devices or WIFI? And with each time, you thought to do something about it. But it just did not happen yet, because there are a lot of things to check and change. So here is a tip: try to do something about your security every day, even if it is just a small thing.
Check one of your passwords today: Is it easy to guess, has it been idle for a period of time? If necessary, change it. Tomorrow; check the WIFI. Does it still use the generic password it came with? These are things you can do for your personal but also your work related passwords. And make checking something an everyday habit, like checking the procedures regarding security at your workplace. Is there a code of conduct on how to use your computer safely and to check if a client that is calling for a hot fix or access to a network device, is actually that client?
The same goes for your network. Does your programmer use sufficient input validation for forms on your web tools? Does he check which characters are allowed in the fields of the form? If the wrong characters are allowed, it could mess up or even erase your entire database. So it is definitely something to check.
Thinking and working on security can be a lengthy task, but if you give it five minutes each day, it could save you a lot of trouble and headaches and does not take up too much of your time. It is a small, daily investment worthwhile!
